Kids of all ages will love painting a rainbow on their toast with brightly colored edible paint. Simply paint, toast and enjoy! All you need to make rainbow toast is a little bit of almond milk, food dye and some bread. This simple and easy craft is perfect for breakfast or snack time and would also be great for a play date or a school activity.
This is one of the girls all time favorite cooking activities. The 3, 6 and 8-year-old all love it! Honestly, I do too. It takes two minutes to set up and they are busy painting bread for as long as I let them, or until they go through all the bread. Last time we had so many beautifully painted masterpieces, we turned them into rainbow croutons.
INGREDIENTS
- Bread
- Almond Milk (or milk of choice)
- Vegan butter (optional)
SPECIAL MATERIALS
- Small cups or bowls
- Paintbrush, pastry brush or Q-tips
- Food coloring (preferably ones made without artificial dye)
TIPS FOR MAKING RAINBOW TOAST
- Bread: Sourdough or white bread works great for this activity because the colors really pop against the white bread. However whole grain bread is another great option! Although the colors won’t pop quite as much, it’s full of fiber which will help fill your little ones up and keep their digestive tract moving.
- Almond Milk: We used unsweetened almond milk, but use whatever milk your family enjoys.
- Food Coloring: We used Watkins food coloring which doesn’t contain artificial dyes or colors and is vegan, made from vegetable juices and spices.
- Paintbrushes: Larger paintbrushes worked better for my 3-year old, while the 6 and 8-year old preferred smaller brushes for finer strokes. Pastry brushes or Q-tips work well too.
- Don’t use too much edible paint: If your child uses too much paint, the toast will be slightly soggy after toasting. I tried to explain this to the girls, but no one listened. However, they were more than happy to eat the toast, even though it was a bit soggy.
- Vegan butter: After we toasted the bread, we added a little vegan butter. You can also top with cinnamon sugar to turn the snack into a sweet treat.
HOW TO MAKE RAINBOW TOAST
STEP 1: MIX THE COLORS
- Choose how many colors you are going to make. Use a small cup or bowl for each one. You could do each color in the rainbow, or use one or two. When I do this food activity with my 3-year-old, I limit it to three colors so it doesn’t get too messy.
- Pour a little milk into each cup (around 1 or 2 tablespoons).
- Squeeze a few drops of food coloring into each bowl and mix.
Let the kids choose! Getting to decide and mix custom colors is one of the kids favorite parts. This is a great opportunity to learn about mixing new colors. I thought the girls were going to decide on a rainbow of colors, but we ended up with 4 different shades of blue.
STEP 2: PAINT THE BREAD
STEP 3: TOAST THE BREAD AND ENJOY!
We topped ours with a little vegan butter, but you could also add cinnamon sugar for a sweet treat.
